The order for leaving Burning Man

Sweep the hex, pull every lag, keep gray water in the jug, then drive. Cleaning the gear is the next page. We are not timing the drive out.

Shop the departure kit. Each piece is its own listing. We don't ship a kit as one box.

How we'd spend

Buy once, then the lighter pieces.

The buy-once piece is the one worth a real cart. The lighter spend still does the job. A usual range is a typical price, not today's.

Each card opens the shop. Amazon links are affiliate links. Your price does not change. How the links work.

Four hex-head lag bolts and a washer on a white background.

Buy once

Lag bolts, 3/8 by 12 inches, 25 with washers

Why this one

The city's securing notes describe lags on the order of 12 inches for the shade people worry about losing. The pack we opened is 3/8 inch by 12 inches, 25 bolts with washers, hex head, sold by Hromigry and shipped by Amazon. Twenty-five is more than one 10 by 10 if you place one at every foot and still keep spares. They are not 18-inch bolts, and they are not rebar.

Often about $35

A yellow DeWalt impact driver with a battery pack attached.

Worth the cart

DeWalt 20V impact driver, tool only

Why this one

A socket on a ratchet will drive a lag. An impact driver is how a camp finishes the shade before the day gets away. The listing we opened is the DeWalt DCF860B, a 20-volt 1/4-inch driver, tool only, so it shares a battery with the DeWalt foot of the blower. The older DCF887 page was used stock. Bring a nut driver that fits the lag head. The battery and the charger are a separate box.

Often about $130, tool only.

The photograph is a shade structure, a tall flag, and bicycles in the dust. It is still standing. It is not a camp we are claiming, and it is not a time for the drive out. MOOP is the sweep of the hex before the car moves. This page is the order around that sweep. After the burn is the cleaning, once you are out. We are not merging them, and we are not publishing a duration.

Four hex-head lag bolts and a washer on a white background.

The hex, then the stakes

Walk the hex in daylight and again with a low light. Anything that was not there when you arrived leaves with you. Then the anchors come out. A lag left in the playa finds a tire. A rebar end without a cap finds a shin on the way to the car.

How the lags and the rebar were put in is shade in the wind. Why a tent stake is not that anchor is tent stakes. The lags we list back out with a socket. The impact driver is the tool, and it is tool only. Caps come off the rebar and go back in the bag. Count them with the stakes.

Gray water still has a lid

The gray-water jug leaves full and closed, labeled GRAY. The shower and the dishes are gray water and a short shower. An RV tank is dumping and pump-out. We are not printing a pump-out price. Contractor bags hold the trash. A magnet is the last pass for metal.

What leaves with you

The pieces we group for the way out are the departure kit: vinegar, bags, the jug, and the sanitation you were already using. Vinegar is for the film on the way home, which is the cleaning note, not a reason to skip the sweep. A rental's cleanup is RV playa prep. That list and this one stay separate.

  • Hex swept before the car moves.
  • Every lag and every piece of rebar out. Caps back in the bag.
  • Gray water in a closed, labeled jug.
  • Trash and moop in the car, not in a pile at the edge of the hex.
  • Departure kit for the pieces that have to leave with you.
  • Gear cleaning on the after-the-burn note. Rental cleaning on playa prep.
  • No drive-out time added by us.

Questions

What do I do before I drive out of Burning Man?
Sweep the hex, pull the lags and the rebar, keep gray water in a closed jug, and put the trash in the car. The moop note is the sweep. The departure kit is the gear that leaves with you. We do not have a measured time for the drive out, and we are not publishing one.
Is leaving the same job as cleaning the gear?
No. This page is the order before the car moves. Cleaning dust off the gear is the after-the-burn note. Cleaning a rental RV is the playa-prep page. They point at each other. They are not the same checklist.
Can gray water stay on the playa if I am leaving?
No. It stays in the labeled jug. The gray-water note is the jug and the shower. An RV tank is the dumping note, and that page does not get a pump-out price from us.
