Gray water and a short shower

Wipes do most days. A shower only counts if a labeled jug catches every drop. Gallons stay on the water note.

How we'd spend

Buy once, then the lighter pieces.

The buy-once piece is the one worth a real cart. The lighter spend still does the job. A usual range is a typical price, not today's.

Gray-water jug

Why this one

The leave-no-trace list is explicit: wash water stays in a container. A five-gallon jug with a lid, marked GRAY so nobody drinks it, is the container. Strain the noodles out first. Haul it to a legal dump on the way out, or evaporate only if you already know the city's current rule and you are set up for it. When in doubt, you carry it home.

A five-gallon jug is often $15–25

Usual range, not today's price.

Reliance Aqua-Tainer, 7 gallon, two pack

Why this one

Bottles are heavy, gone by Wednesday, and the wind takes the empties. We choose jugs that stack in a car and pour from a spigot. Two of them is fourteen gallons, a serious start for one person's drinking water, not a camp's washing water. Do that math before you fall in love with a cute canteen.

Often about $54

Solar shower bag

Why this one

The should-bring list says a portable shower with a way to catch the water. A five-gallon solar bag is that shower. It uses water you already counted, and every drop goes in the gray-water jug. Wipes still do most days. The bag is for the rinse that makes Thursday feel human.

The gallon page should stay the gallon page. This one is the jug, the label, and the short rinse. The Survival Guide says you bring your own water, and that public pools and showers are not permitted. The leave-no-trace tips are the city's page for what you do with the water after you have used it. Wash water stays in a container. We are not writing a stricter rule than the pages we link.

Wipes first

Unscented wipes do most days. Used wipes are trash. They come home, including the ones whose box says flushable. A cold wipe is the shower a lot of people mean. It does not replace drinking water. The gallons, including the 1.5 the city names, stay on the water plan.

A shower only with a jug under it

The solar shower bag we list is a five-gallon bag. It uses water you already counted. Every drop goes into the gray-water jug: a five-gallon jug with a lid, labeled GRAY so nobody drinks it. Heat the bag on a clean board, hang it where the runoff hits a tub you can pour into that jug, and keep the lid on. A shower with nowhere for the water to go is a spill.

Dishes get a splash, noodles strained out first, and that splash goes in the same jug. The vinegar bottle is a different bottle. If you are not sure you are allowed to evaporate wash water this year, the water note already says to carry it to a legal dump, and to bring it home when you are in doubt. This page does not add a new version of that sentence.

Drinking water is the other jug

The water kit is drinking water: jugs with a spigot and a pack. Do not mix them with the gray jug. The aisle is water gear.

An RV tank is a different container

A gray-water jug in the camp bin is not an RV tank. RV dumping and pump-out is where that rule lives. We are not printing a pump-out price. Melt from a food cooler is not drinking water either. That belongs on ice and the cooler, and it still goes in the gray-water jug.

  • Wipes for the ordinary day. The used ones come home.
  • A shower only if a labeled jug with a lid is under it.
  • Drinking jugs and the gray jug are not the same bottle.
  • Dish water in the gray jug, noodles strained out first.
  • Cooler melt that touched food in the gray jug, not in a cup.
  • An RV tank on the dumping note. No pump-out price here.
  • The gallon math left on the water note.

Questions

Can gray water go on the playa?
No. Wash water stays in a container with a lid. The Survival Guide and the leave-no-trace pages are the city's side of that, and we link them. The jug we list is a five-gallon jug marked GRAY so nobody drinks it. The water note already covers a spill. We are not adding a stricter rule on this page.
Is cooler melt drinking water?
No. Melt that has touched food goes in the gray-water jug. The ice note says not to drink it and not to pour it on the playa. That page owns the cooler. Ice sales do not replace the drinking water you hauled in.
Do I need a shower at Burning Man?
Wipes do most days. A shower bag is optional, and only if the gray-water jug is there to catch it. The bag uses water you already counted on the water note. A long shower is how that drinking water runs out. Public pools and showers are not permitted. That line is the Survival Guide's, quoted on the water note.
