For people who flew in
A bike for the playa, rented before the gate.
A rental is a frame. The lights, the flag, and the lock are still yours. If you are not driving your own frame, this is the errand. Since 2023, fee-based rental, pickup, and drop-off happen outside Black Rock City. The shops are in Reno, Sparks, Nixon, and Gerlach. You roll through the gate with the bike.
Which bike
A cruiser, an e-bike, or a bike you keep.
Playa cruiser
One speed, fat tires, and a basket if the shop includes one. This is the bike most people rent in Sparks, Reno, and Gerlach. It still needs your light, your flag, and your lock. A rental is a frame.
E-bike
Jagerbikes, Muuv, Playa eBikes, and BM Bike Rentals publish e-bike prices. Nixon is on Highway 447, which is why Playa eBikes is the pickup on the way to the gate. They do not deliver or repair inside the city, and their policy voids the warranty if the bike is used at the event. Charge it before the dust week, and do not count on a shop on playa.
Buy it and keep it
Reno Bike Project and the Kiwanis Bike Program are on the event's own list. Their page lists refurbished bikes from $100 and used bikes from $80. You own it, so the exit is a donation back to one of those counters or a bike that goes home with you. A rental does not get left in the city.
The city's rule
The rental happens before the gate.
Since 2023, fee-based bike rental, pickup, and drop-off have to happen outside Black Rock City. The event's bike page says rentals continue in Reno and Nixon. You roll through the gate with the bike. A shop post that offers delivery to a camp inside the city is not a plan. Jagerbikes has one of those posts. Book the Reno counter.
Bring a front light, a red rear light, a tall flag, and a lock you actually use. Put your name and camp on the frame before it leans against a stranger's shade. Dust packs a chain, a freewheel, and a light connector. Wipe the chain before you return a rental. A bike you are keeping gets the same wipe, then the vinegar pass in the cleaning note once you are home. Water alone turns the dust into paste.
We are an independent shop. We are not affiliated with Burning Man Project. Their bike page is the rule.

Nixon is on Highway 447, on the way to the gate. The event's bike page names Reno and Nixon as where rentals are available. If you buy the bike later, the rental can be credited toward the purchase. A refundable deposit is pre-authorized at pickup. Cancellations after August 15, 2026 are non-refundable.
Their own policy says they are not a Burning Man vendor, they do not deliver or repair on playa, and a warranty is void if the bike is used at the event. Dust damage can take part or all of the deposit.

Burner Express can carry a bike. The add-on starts at $50 from Reno and $95 from San Francisco, with a 50-pound maximum. If you ship your own frame, BikeFlights delivers to events and bike shops, and Reno Bike Project assembles bikes shipped to Reno.
Before you leave the shop.
- Put your name and camp address on the frame.
- Check that one brake works, and that the seat is yours for the week.
- Ask how the deposit comes back, and where the bike is returned.
- Plan the rack before you leave the counter. A strap rack and a cruiser fight, and a covered license plate is your problem on the highway.
- On the way out, a bought bike can go back to Reno Bike Project or Kiwanis. A rental goes back to the counter that owns it.
Questions we keep hearing.
- Can I rent a bike inside Black Rock City?
- No. Since 2023, fee-based bike rental, pickup, and drop-off have to happen outside Black Rock City. The event's bike page says rentals continue in Reno and Nixon. You bring the bike through the gate yourself.
- Where do travelers pick up a Burning Man bike rental?
- Sparks, Reno, Nixon on Highway 447, and Gerlach. The event's own list of local bikes names Reno Bike Project, Black Rock Bicycles, and the Kiwanis Bike Program. Book before you land. Walk-up stock disappears.
- Does a rental come ready for night?
- Bring a front light, a red rear light, a tall flag, a lock you use, and a pump with a spare tube. Gift repair camps run out of common tubes. The lights, the flag, and the lock are still yours.
- Should I rent a cruiser or an e-bike?
- A cruiser is the ordinary playa bike: one speed, a basket if the shop includes one, and a frame you can lock. An e-bike helps a long city or a tired week, and it still needs a light, a lock, and a plan for the battery. The city's bike page and the DMV rules for personal transport decide what is allowed inside the city.
- Is it better to buy a bike than rent one?
- Buy one if you want to keep it or donate it on the way out. The event's bike page lists used bikes from the Kiwanis program at $80 and refurbished bikes from Reno Bike Project at $100. A rental goes back to the counter that owns it. Compare that live rental price with the bought bike, plus how you will get either one through the gate.
The event's own bike page is the rule. Bicycles, Burning Man Project. Note: the bike is how you get around. Lights, a lock, and the flat you practice at home. RVs and trucks.
