A marker for your Burning Man camp

A flag, a banner, or something distinctive, tall enough that you can find the hex. If it sheds, it is moop. The bike flag is a different object.

Four people at night beside a vehicle strung with warm lights. One wears a fur coat and goggles. Another wears a red patterned coat and a feathered hat.

How we'd spend

Buy once, then the lighter pieces.

The buy-once piece is the one worth a real cart. The lighter spend still does the job. A usual range is a typical price, not today's.

Each card opens the shop. Amazon links are affiliate links. Your price does not change. How the links work.

Small lights clipped to guy lines and stake tops in the dust at dusk.

Dangling lights for the stakes

Why this one

The stake that holds the shade is invisible at night, and that is how a shin finds it. A little light on the line, or snapped on the cap, is how camp stays walkable. These mark the hardware. They do not replace the lag bolts or the rebar. If one falls off, it is moop, so they come down with the shade.

A set is often $20–40

A dusty bike with a tall orange flag above the handlebars at dusk.

Does the job

Tall bike safety flag

Why this one

Lights mark you. They do not lift you out of a crowd of other bikes. A tall flag is how art cars and the rider behind you find you in dust. A pool noodle is the camp version because it stays up and it bends. El wire is sparkle. The height is the job.

A pole and a flag, or a pool noodle from camp.

Sharpie permanent markers in a row, including a fine point.

The lighter spend

Sharpie fine-point markers

Why this one

The playa is full of identical bikes, lamps, bottles, and baskets. A name and a camp address, written before gate, is how a light comes back. Twelve is more than a week needs, because markers walk off and the one in a pocket dies in the dust.

Often about $15

The photograph is a camp at night with lights on people and a vehicle. We are not naming anyone in it, and the lights in the frame are not a required flag. Finding a person who left camp is finding your people. This page is the address of the hex. The Survival Guide should-bring list, already quoted on that other note, is a flag, a banner, or something distinctive. We have not published a height.

Something you can see, that does not shed

A marker that sheds is moop the hour the wind takes a thread. Feathers, glitter, and fringe stay home. The leave-at-home note and the moop note are the rule. A plain flag or a banner you can count back into the car is the marker. Write the camp address on paper anyway. A marker you can see is not a substitute for the address in a pocket.

What not to bring is the shed list. MOOP is the sweep. A marker puts the address on the bottle and the bike. It does not make the flag.

Lights on the lines

Stake lights hang on guy lines and stake tops. They mark the hardware. They do not replace the lag bolts, and they are not the camp marker by themselves. If one falls off, it is moop, so they come down with the shade. Camp lanterns are camp lights.

The bike flag stays on the bike

The tall bike flag is so the rider behind you can see you. It is not the flag at the hex. The bike note is the beam, the lock, and that flag. One sentence, so the two searches do not collapse.

  • A flag, a banner, or something distinctive at the hex.
  • Nothing that sheds. The leave-at-home note is the list.
  • The camp address on paper, in a pocket.
  • Stake lights on the lines and the stake tops, taken down with the shade.
  • The bike flag left on the bike page.
  • Finding a person still on the find-your-people note.
  • No flag height added by us.

Questions

What counts as a Burning Man camp marker?
The Survival Guide's should-bring list, as we already quote it on the find-your-people note, is a flag, a banner, or something distinctive. It is how you ride home to the hex. We have not published a required height. A marker that sheds is moop.
Is the bike flag the camp marker?
No. The bike flag is on the bike, so other riders can see you. The camp marker stays at the hex. One sentence is the whole distinction. The bike note owns the flag on the bike.
Do stake lights replace the marker?
No. Stake lights mark guy lines and stake tops so nobody walks into them. They help you see the marker and the hardware. They are not the address of the camp, and they are not anchors.
