A dusty bike with a tall orange flag above the handlebars at dusk.

BS-314

Essential

Tall bike safety flag

Burning Man bike gear

A tall flag so the rider behind you can see you.

Why it's on the list

Lights mark you. They do not lift you out of a crowd of other bikes. A tall flag is how art cars and the rider behind you find you in dust. A pool noodle is the camp version because it stays up and it bends. El wire is sparkle. The height is the job.

How we use it

Put it on before you leave camp, not after you have already been invisible for a night. A flag that folds into the spokes is a different problem. If you build one from scrap, it still has to clear the bikes around you.

Heads up

A flag is not a light. You still need a front beam on the ground and a red light behind you. Glow sticks are moop the moment they fall off.

Tall bike safety flag

A pole and a flag, or a pool noodle from camp.
