People shop a costume first. The week is sun, dust, a bicycle, and a night that is not the afternoon. The Survival Guide is where the clothing list and the weather description live. This page is how we turn that list into things we actually put on. Feet, socks, and the dusk wash are in playa foot care for first timers.

Bring fewer outfits than the photos suggest. Every extra layer is something to dust, lose, and pack out. Three jobs cover the body: sun in the afternoon, warmth after dark, and a shell if the sky changes. The costume, if you still want one, has to do one of those jobs or stay light enough to carry home.

We are an independent outfitter. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Burning Man Project. The event name is used so you know which week this gear is for.

The bright hours

A sun hat with a chin strap stays on the bike. A hat without a hold is a gift to the wind. A cotton shemagh covers the neck and takes an ordinary dusty breeze. Mineral sunscreen and lip balm with SPF live in the day bag, not in a bin you will not open until evening. Reapply. Ears, hands, and the neck under the scarf are the spots people miss.

Eyes are a different piece of clothing. Mirrored day goggles with a foam seal stay on when the sun is the problem. The work pair with capped vents is the spare, and the whiteout plan. Both are in the dust mask and goggles note. A scarf is not a seal.

Shoes

Open toes are a bet against hot ground, a bike pedal, and whatever is sticking out of the playa. Wear closed shoes you have already walked in. A new pair plus alkaline dust is how a good Tuesday becomes a limp. We are not going to name a boot. If the pair gives you a hot spot on a normal Saturday at home, it will give you a worse one here. Socks you can change, and the dusk wash, are on the foot-care note.

After sunset

The Survival Guide is plain that the afternoon is not the night. We pack a long underwear base layer against the skin, a packable warm layer in the basket, and a large pashmina for the shoulders. Cotton as the only layer stays wet and stays cold. The jacket is for the ride. The bag is for the cot. That half of the week is sleeping bags for cold Burning Man nights.

When the sky changes

A packable rain shell lives with the warm layer. The Survival Guide is the instruction for wind, lightning, and rain. We are not going to rewrite it. The shell is the jacket we still want in the bag. A costume cape soaks through. Leather work gloves are for the frame and the rebar, not for the party.

A costume that comes home

Wear what you can shake out. Their precycle page names the costume pieces that become moop, including glitter, which they do not allow in the city. Read that page before you glue anything to a jacket. Feathers from a ripped coat and a sequin that lets go are the same problem as a zip-tie tail. What not to bring is the longer version of that decision, and Burning Man MOOP and leave no trace is what you do with the bits that still show up.

Questions

What should a first-timer wear to Burning Man?
Closed shoes you have already walked in, a hat with a strap, sunscreen and lip balm in the day bag, goggles that seal, and a warm layer you can bike in after dark. The Survival Guide's clothing list is the official one. A costume is optional, and it has to survive dust and come home in one piece.
Do I need a costume for Burning Man?
No. People wear wild clothes, and they also wear the same dusty outfit for three days. Wear something you can bike, sleep, and shake out. If it sheds feathers, glitter, or sequins, it belongs in the leave-at-home pile. Their precycle page names the pieces that become moop.
What do I wear when the night gets cold?
The Survival Guide is where the overnight temperature guidance lives. We pack a base layer, a jacket that still works on a bicycle, and a bag for the cot. A cape that looked warm in a photo is not that jacket. The cold-nights note is the sleep half of the same problem.
