Why it's on the list
The jacket is for the ride. The bag is for the cot. The layer against you is what makes both of those work when the temperature falls fifty degrees after sunset. A long-underwear set, merino if you want it to still smell like a person on day five, or a light synthetic if you will rinse it. Cotton as the only layer stays wet and stays cold. No feathers, and nothing that sheds glitter.
How we use it
Buy a set you can sleep in and ride in, snug enough to go under the jacket. A spare pair is how you are not wearing Tuesday's dust to bed on Friday. Shake them out before they go in the car.
Heads up
This is warmth, not a costume, and not the rain shell. If it will not keep you warm on a bicycle at 2 a.m., it is the wrong weight.
