Packable warm layer

Burning Man sleep gear

A jacket for the fifty-degree drop after sunset.

Why it's on the list

The survival guide is plain about it: the afternoon is not the night. Overnight lows fall into the forties, and the ride back is the coldest hour. A packable insulated jacket, or a real fleece, lives on the bike basket. The pashmina is the wrap. This is the layer that still works when you are moving.

How we use it

Choose something that stuffs into its own pocket and does not shed glitter or feathers. Feathers from a ripped coat are moop. A shell for rain is the other piece, already on the pack list.

Heads up

A costume cape is not this. If it will not keep you warm on a bicycle at 2 a.m., it is not the layer.

Packable warm layer

A packable jacket is often $40–90
