People pack for whiteouts and then meet a sky that drops water. The surface stops behaving like a road. The 2026 Survival Guide says long rain is uncommon, and it also says to be ready: a bucket if the portos are out, cold-weather clothes, food and medicine, and a battery or solar radio. BMIR is 94.5 FM on that page. The same section is in the PDF. Read it before you treat a forum post as permission to drive. We will not invent how many inches fell in any year.

When the playa is wet, walk. Mud packs a bike tire faster than a strong rider can clear it, and a car makes a rut the city has to live with. A headlamp still matters, because the walk home may be after dark. The flag and the lock stay on the bike where you left it. You can love that bike again after the ground has set. You cannot love the rut.
A packable rain shell lives in the day bag, stuffed small, with no glitter and no fringe. It is for the walk. It is not a tent fly and it is not shade. Closed shoes you can walk in are the other half. A costume cape soaks, drags, and then sheds. An umbrella is for sun on a dry walk. In wind it is a kite. Close it.
The shell we list is a search for a packable rain jacket, because the exact model rotates. A small dry bag takes the phone, a warm layer, and anything else that quits when it is wet. A phone tether keeps the phone on you. It does not make the phone waterproof. Leather work gloves are for the wet strap and the stake you still have to pull later.
A full rainfly is what keeps a surprise rain off the sleeping bag. Shade cloth is not that roof. A solid tarp used as shade can catch water in the middle and sag. A camp shade PDF that circulated in 2026 describes tarps doing that in the rain years. We are not repeating their wind numbers. Mesh is not a roof, and a tarp that holds a puddle is a load. If the frame is straining, people get clear and the cloth comes down. Lags and straps keep the frame from becoming the next problem. They do not make cloth waterproof.
Get the cloth down if the wind is taking it. A wet panel is a heavier sail. Electrical gear comes up off the ground. Their weather notes say to keep power connections out of the water and to leave generators and electric tools alone while it is wet. Gallon zip bags hold batteries, a headlamp, and the socks you still want dry. Contractor bags can cover a bin for an afternoon. They are not a roof.
That shade PDF is Future Turtles, 2026. How the lags and the straps work is how to anchor shade for playa wind. The fly and the cot are the tent note. Stakes for the tent itself are tent stakes for playa wind.
Put fresh batteries in a small AM/FM radio before gate. BMIR is 94.5. A Bluetooth speaker with no tuner is not a radio. Your car radio does not count once you are away from the car. The bucket is the toilet if the portos are closed. The bags and the lid are part of the bucket. Wet trash still comes home in a contractor bag. Nothing about rain makes gray water legal on the ground.
Black Rock City is a walking and biking city on a dry day. On a wet day it is a staying-put city. The RV and the car were already supposed to stay at camp. Rain is a bad time to discover the exception you hoped you had. If you are in a rig, the gray water and the black tank still do not go on the playa. Wait until you can leave on the surface they have opened, and clean the hex before you call it done.
The bucket, the bags, and 1-ply are a bucket toilet. What goes on your body the rest of the week is what to wear. The rig and the tanks are in RV and car camping.
