A thin packable rain shell folded on a dusty crate.

BS-528

Essential

Packable rain shell

Burning Man sleep gear

A jacket you can bike in when the playa turns to mud.

Why it's on the list

The must-bring list says rain gear, because this desert has shut the city down in mud. A packable shell lives in the day bag with the warm layer. It is for the ride and the walk back. It is not a tent fly, and it is not the shade.

How we use it

Choose something that stuffs small and does not shed glitter. Closed shoes are the other half, already on the pack list. If the sky goes dark, walk. Mud packs a bike tire faster than you can pedal.

Heads up

A costume cape soaks through. If it will not keep a shirt dry for twenty minutes, it is not the shell.
