Plain hand-warmer packets on a dusty crate.

BS-534

Essential

Air-activated hand warmers

Burning Man sleep gear

A pocket full of heat for the ride after midnight.

Why it's on the list

The base layer covers you. It does not cover the hands on the bars when the wind is up. Air-activated warmers live in the day bag, unopened, and you crack a pair when the ride home is the coldest hour. Toe warmers are the same idea for boots. Buy a box. One pair is a story you tell on Tuesday.

How we use it

Open them when you need them, and slip them in a pocket or over the base layer. Not against bare skin, and not loose in the sleeping bag against you all night. The used packs are trash. They come home. They are not kindling.

Heads up

They are single-use heat, not a substitute for the jacket or the bag. A warmer left on the playa is moop.
