Straight-leg shade frame

Burning Man shade gear

A heavy straight-leg frame. The pop-up canopy it came with fails in the wind.

Why it's on the list

Aluminet needs something that does not fold up in the wind. A straight-leg frame, steel, ten by ten or bigger, is the structure we point people at. Slant-leg pop-ups walk. The pretty canopy that came in the bag is not the shade. Put the open knit on the frame, lag or rebar every foot, and strap the midpoints.

How we use it

Read the leg style before you buy. Straight legs, a roof that can take a cloth over it, and a weight rating you believe. The playa will test the corners first. Bring the socket for the lags. Count every leg fitting at exodus.

Heads up

A frame without anchors is a kite with poles. Do not buy the cheapest slant-leg tent and call it camp shade.

A real frame is often $150–400
