A small plain bottle of gel sanitizer on a dusty crate.

BS-790

Essential

Hand sanitizer

Burning Man camp gear

Sixty percent alcohol or more, in the day bag.

Why it's on the list

The must-bring list names hand sanitizer at 60 percent alcohol or higher, because the sink is a story you tell yourself. A small bottle rides with the wipes. A big bottle stays at the kitchen. Dust cakes the pump, so a flip cap in a zip bag lasts longer than a fancy dispenser.

How we use it

Rub it in and let it dry. It is not a rinse for your eyes and it is not a substitute for washing with the water you counted when your hands are actually filthy. The empty comes home.

Heads up

Keep it off an open flame. Alcohol gel and a stove are a bad pair.
