Rechargeable AA cells in a tray beside a headlamp.

BS-616

Worth packing

Panasonic Eneloop AA, 8 pack

Panasonic

Burning Man power gear

Eight AA cells for the headlamp, the lantern, and the second headlamp.

Why it's on the list

Alkaline cells sag on night three. The listing we opened is Panasonic's Eneloop 8-pack, BK-3MCCA8BA, sold by Amazon. Low-self-discharge cells hold a charge in a bin, which is why they live with the lamps. Bring them full, plus a few alkalines. A dead cell and a fresh cell look identical at 2 a.m.

How we use it

Charge them before the gate. Label the bag. The maker's cycle count and milliamp-hour figure are theirs. We have not run that test.

Heads up

Buy a decent charger, not the cheapest one with no cutoff. Do not mix fresh and spent cells in the same lamp.
