Fire blanket

Why it's on the list

The survival guide lists a fire blanket next to the rest of the should-bring kit. It lives by the stove, in a pouch you can open with one hand. It smothers a pan or a small flame. It is not a plan for a burn barrel, and it is not a costume.

How we use it

Hang it where the cook can reach it without stepping over the stove. Read the size. A tiny square sold as a gag is not this. Pack it home even if you never open it.

Heads up

A blanket does not replace the extinguisher, and neither one replaces walking away and getting help.
