Clack hand fan

Burning Man lights gear

A large bamboo fan. Wind for the dance, and a clack when it opens.

Why it's on the list

The misting fan cools a spot under the shade. A hand fan is the one you carry, and it is the rave piece people actually use out here: a flick, a breeze, something to do with your hands between art cars. Bamboo ribs and a cloth leaf. Big enough to move air. It lives in the day bag, not in a bin at camp.

How we use it

Look for a large festival fan, about 13 inches closed, bamboo, with a cloth that does not shed glitter. Glitter on the playa is moop. A loud clack is the point. If a rib cracks, the pieces come home in the bag.

Heads up

It is not a weapon and it is not a bike flag. A fan in the spokes is a different problem. Dust packs the pivot, so open and close it before you store it wet.
