Repel Umbrella

Burning Man shade gear

Shade you can carry while you walk, and cover if the sky actually rains.

Why it's on the list

Camp shade is a frame lagged into the playa. It does not follow you to the porto at noon. The Survival Guide's should-bring list includes umbrellas and parasols for midday sun while you are walking. A compact umbrella lives in the day bag for that walk.

How we use it

This is for walking, not for camp. A whiteout turns it into a kite. Close it and put the goggles on. It comes home.

Heads up

The frame and the cloth are still the shade. If the wind is up, the umbrella stays in the bag. We are not repeating wind-speed claims from the listing.
